Alternative Learning Center Rebuild

Overview

The is a school community built on second chances—and a deeply rooted belief that every student desires and deserves to achieve their greatest potential. Students attend the ALC for a variety of reasons, including social and discipline challenges at their home schools as well as community-based incidents.

The ALC team provides academic instruction, reading intervention programs and character education to help students modify inappropriate behavior, achieve academically and develop social skills to succeed at their home schools and in their communities and families.

The ALC will move in Summer 2025 because its current campus at the Anita Ferrales Coy Facility is closing to make way for affordable housing for ¼öƬapp staff and families.

  • A firm timeline for the construction of a new ALC facility on the Anita Ferrales Coy site has not yet been determined.
  • The goal is to fund the ALC rebuild using the revenue generated from the housing development, however, those dollars are not immediately available due to the housing construction timeline.
  • The future rebuild is not part of the scope.
  • The conceptual site plan for the housing includes dedicated space for a future rebuild of a future ALC.

Current Status

Starting in the 2025-26 school year, the ALC, as well as some community partners, will co-locate at the Mendez Middle School campus.

  • ALC, as well as the , the , and the Love Hub, will be located in separate areas of the campus.
  • ALC students will not share common classroom space or overlap in the daily activities of Mendez students or the other community partners. There will be separate student drop-off/pick-up areas, separate restrooms and a separate gymnasium for PE classes.

In addition, the district engaged , an expert in educational leadership and policy from the University of Texas at Austin, to lead a program evaluation for the ALC.

  • The program evaluation will equip the district with data and stakeholder feedback to create clear, actionable recommendations for changes to improve outcomes for all students.
  • For programming and practices, this evaluation will inform and strengthen the support for students.
  • It will also inform the design and development of a future modernized campus for the ALC.
